Introduction

The Cleveland Observer (TCO) is committed to providing a comprehensive and educational internship experience that integrates academic learning with practical skill development in journalism and media. Our internship program is designed to benefit interns by offering real-world experience, mentorship, and professional growth opportunities.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Academic Standing: Interns must be enrolled in an accredited college or university, pursuing a degree related to journalism, communications, or a relevant field.
  • GPA Requirement: A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 is required.
  • Class Standing: Preference is given to juniors and seniors; however, exceptional sophomores may be considered.

Application Process

  1. Submission Materials:
    • Resume: Detailing educational background, work experience, and relevant skills.
    • Cover Letter: Expressing interest in the internship and career aspirations.
    • Writing Samples: Two to three pieces demonstrating journalistic ability.
  2. Interview: Qualified candidates will be invited for an interview with the internship coordinator and potential supervisors.

Internship Duration and Hours

  • Term Length: Internships align with academic semesters, typically lasting 10-16 weeks.
  • Weekly Commitment: Interns are expected to commit 10-15 hours per week.
  • Total Hours: A minimum of 100 hours over the course of the internship is required.

Compensation

TCO is dedicated to equitable internship practices. All contracted internships are compensated at or above the prevailing minimum wage.

Intern Responsibilities

  • Content Creation: Produce articles, reports, or multimedia content as assigned.
  • Research: Conduct background research to support content development.
  • Meetings: Attend editorial meetings and contribute to discussions.
  • Deadlines: Adhere to all assigned deadlines and editorial guidelines.

Supervision and Mentorship

  • Supervisor Assignment: Each intern will be paired with a staff member who will provide guidance, feedback, and support throughout the internship.
  • Regular Check-ins: Weekly meetings with the supervisor to discuss progress and address any concerns.

Evaluation

  • Mid-Term Review: Assessment of performance to date, identifying strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Final Evaluation: Comprehensive review at the internship’s conclusion, including self-assessment and supervisor feedback.

Academic Credit

Interns seeking academic credit must coordinate with their educational institution and inform TCO of any specific requirements.

Professional Conduct

  • Ethical Standards: Interns are expected to uphold the highest standards of journalistic integrity and ethics.
  • Confidentiality: Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information encountered during the internship.
  • Workplace Behavior: Demonstrate professionalism, punctuality, and respect in all interactions.

Termination Policy

TCO reserves the right to terminate the internship if an intern fails to meet performance standards or violates company policies.
